Mint Annual Banking Conclave 2018
Overview
It has been a tumultuous time for Indian banks.
Mounting bad loans and low credit off-take have been plaguing the industry even as non-banking finance companies are enjoying a dream run on bourses. To complicate the matters, many government-owned banks are capital starved. Do all these means, it’s end of the road of Indian banks? Certainly not.
Clearly, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Most bank have recognized their bad assets and, armed by a new law and backed by the regulator and the government, they are in the process of resolving the issues. Most importantly, the government has also committed to pump in capital – Rs 2.1 trillion over next two years. Also, technology is changing fast. Already, a few banks are feeling temped to say, “we also do banking!”
Mint brought India’s finest banking minds together at Mint Annual Banking Conclave 2018 to debate and dissect the issues faced by Indian banking – financial inclusion, merger and consolidation, digital edge, etc. Some of the most renowned names in the Indian banking industry were a part of this conference.
