Shilpa Kumar, MD & Head India, British International Investment

Shilpa Kumar serves as the Managing Director and Head of India at British International Investment (BII) – the UK’s development finance institution and impact investor. In her role, she leads teams across Mumbai and Bengaluru and is responsible for driving BII’s climate finance and inclusive growth investments across India.

With over three decades of leadership experience in banking, financial services, and impact investment, Shilpa brings deep expertise in building businesses, and working with entrepreneurs, and policymakers. Prior to BII, she was a Partner at Omidyar Network India, where she led strategy and investments across responsible tech, climate, cities, and inclusive property initiatives. She also led policy work in financial inclusion.

Her distinguished career includes long-standing leadership within the ICICI Group, where she served as MD and CEO of ICICI Securities. Shilpa played a pivotal role in establishing and growing the bank’s treasury and global markets operations.

Shilpa has held several board positions including at ICICI Securities, Clearing Corporation of India, and National Investment and Infrastructure Fund. She has also contributed to regulatory and policyshaping platforms such as SEBI’s Secondary Markets Advisory Committee and RBI’s Technical Advisory Committee. Beyond these associations, Shilpa has also held positions in industry bodies like FIMMDA and the FICCI Capital Markets Committee, besides serving on the advisory committees of the National Stock Exchange, Bombay Stock Exchange, and National Securities Depository Ltd.

An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata, Shilpa is widely regarded for her commitment to inclusive finance, ethical investing, and driving systemic change through capital.
