Introduction

Sustainability is a multi-pronged theme, and it needs to be addressed on multiple fronts, requiring different kinds of solutions. Despite efforts being made, climate change is expected to have severe impacts in India, such as high-temperature climatic regimes, unpredictable monsoons, and rising sea levels. The country needs to take preemptive steps to prepare for these challenges, such as strengthening weather forecasting systems and investing in weather-resistant crops.

India has committed to meeting its obligations under the Paris Agreement by reducing the emissions intensity of GDP and increasing non-fossil fuel-based energy sources. The country aims to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy installed capacity by 2030, with a focus on solar energy. However, there are challenges facing the solar industry, including policy levers that need to be addressed.

Sustainability is not just about renewable energy but also includes managing forest cover, sustainable housing, and other aspects. Large conglomerates have a responsibility to take action across their businesses to contribute to the country's sustainable goals. Investments in non-solar renewable sources such as wind, hydro, biofuels, and green hydrogen are also important, but they face their own set of challenges.

The power industry plays a significant role in carbon emissions, and efforts are needed to make the entire value chain more environmentally friendly. This includes investing in green power infrastructure, using cleaner sources of generating power and promoting the uptake of renewable power among households. More investments and efforts are needed to establish a power industry that generates renewable power in a clean and sustainable manner.

The burning issues revolving around the current situation, action plans in force, future corrective steps, financial requirements, etc. will be taken up in depth at the Mint Sustainability Summit 2024. The Summit will provide a thought leadership platform for policymakers, industry captains, academicians, and top bureaucrats to meet and discuss the way ahead for India's sustainability play.
