Professor (Dr.) Mahipal. S. Sachdev, Chairman & Medical Director of Centre for Sight is a renowned ophthalmic Surgeon who is recognized for his expertise in the area of Cataract, Refractive & Corneal Surgery, both nationally and internationally. He was honored with Padmashri award on January 26, 2007. In the year 2017, he attained Professorship in Ophthalmology & in year 2020 has been elected as President of All India Ophthalmological Society. He is widely credited to be pioneer in India in propagating the technique of Phacoemulsification for cataract surgery and Lasik Laser for removal of glasses.
In 1996, Professor (Dr.) Mahipal Sachdev stepped out of AIIMS with a dream of creating a world class eye hospital. “Centre for Sight” is an outcome of that.
Professor (Dr.) Mahipal is a visionary and leader. He has always been the torchbearer in the field of eye care pioneering several procedures including laser assisted blade less surgery for cataract and Lasik. Prof. Mahipal learned about “Phaco” (Stich less micro incision cataract surgery) while pursuing his fellowship in United States. He knew it was next big thing in ophthalmology. Prof. Mahipal was among the first to introduce Lasik and Phakic IOLs & Femtosecond laser technology for lasik. Prof. Mahipal also has pioneered blade free Femtocatarct technology in India.
He has authored over 5 books on cataract & Refractive surgery including the first book on phaco by an Indian Ophthalmologist. These books are today referred to by every budding Ophthalmologist. Prof. Mahipal is an active contributor of articles on eye health in mass media for the benefit of the general public also.
He has been recognized globally with fellowships and scholarships from the “Fifth International Symposium on Immunopathology”- Japan, “International Society of Eye Research”, “Research to Prevent Blindness”, New York, “Fisons award by the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists”, USA amongst others. In India he has won the “A C Aggrawal Memorial Trophy”, “Col. Ranagachary Certificate”, “Krishna Sohan Singh Trophy”, “Dr Ishwar Chand Silver Jubilee Award” to name a few. Prof. Mahipal Sachdev has recently been awarded “Dr. S.N. Mitter Oration award” in DOS conference held in April 2017”. Prof. Mahipal has also received “Life Time Achievement Award- Ophthalmology” at Times Health Care Achievers program held in Delhi. To add on Prof. Mahipal was honored with a Gold Medal in KOSCON conference 2017 in Bengaluru.
Recently, Prof. (Dr.) Mahipal S. Sachdev was honored with Padamshree Prof. Dr. TP Lahane Award Award at MOSCON 2022. Further, he was honored with Dr. Hari Mohan Oration 2022 in 73rd DOS Conference at New Delhi. He is presently also member of the Global Advisory Board, J & J. Prof. Sachdev was felicitated with the APACRS Certified Educator (A.C.E) award, and was also awarded appreciation as the IIRSI representative, at the APACRS 2023, Singapore.
Prof. (Dr.) Mahipal S. Sachdev is a rare combination of a brilliant surgeon, an entrepreneur and above all, a compassionate human being. He has ensured that the Indian Flag remains flying high in the domain of eye care and that the patients in India have access to the best and the latest when it comes to treating their eyes in line with his own mission statement “…. every eye deserves the best”.
